What does a robot chemist look like? Well… like a robot. In our last episode of the season, we are joined by Andy Cooper, Professor of the University of Liverpool, to discuss how  building intelligent robots can lead to materials discovery! Professor Cooper’s team has brought to life every chemist’s dream: a tireless, precise, and resilient lab partner!

The lab’s research focuses on synthesising materials with novel functions, and on developing methods for controlling material structure at the atomic level. By utilising the mobile robot chemist to carry out experiments, the discovery of materials can be greatly accelerated. Don’t worry though, the robot’s purpose is to augment scientist’s ability to do research, not to replace them (yet). The third season will conclude on July 11th. Don’t miss it!

The digitisation of chemistry and materials science. What are they, exactly? So far this season, we have seen all kinds of blends between computer science and the physical sciences. Our speaker Teodoro Laino works in the industry, and is a Research Scientist at IBM Research Europe in Zurich. Teodoro will guide us towards the lab of the future and we are very much looking forward to finding out what the future looks like!

The RoboRXN project, an innovative technology of Teodoro’s team, is a cloud-based AI-driven autonomous chemical lab, aiming to change the way chemists work. RoboRXN provides a novel way to perform chemical synthesis in an safe, automated environment, that can be accessed remotely! We are only going to say this: RoboRXN will help chemistry transition from a traditional to high-tech environment and will render materials discovery a piece of cake. Join us on June 13th!

Our next guest has just received the ERC Starting Grant, and is ready for a new chapter to commence! With her research, and the freedom the ERC Grant has granted her (pun intended), Francesca Grisoni, an Assistant Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology, is building her own team to explore the untapped potential of AI to discover new therapeutics and medicines.

Francesca will tell us all we need to know about the ‘language of chemistry’, on the 9th of May. The AI renaissance has led to the development of ‘Chemical Language Models’, inspired by natural language processing approaches. These models are used to generate molecules de novo, which hold the desired biological properties. Count us intrigued!

CHAINS 2022

The Huck group was well represented this year at CHAINS – the main chemistry conference for chemists in the Netherlands. One of our postdocs, Oliver Maguire, presented his recent work on a prebiotic phosphorylation system for creating phosphorylated molecules critical to the Origins of Life. Many members of the group also presented their work in the poster sessions.

Build a Cell seminar by Roel Maas

Yesterday (7 February, 2022) Roel Maas presented his and Bob van Sluijs’ work about a new pipeline for the characterization of cell-free synthetic genetic networks at the Build a Cell seminar series. In this pipeline a combination of microfluidics, optimal experimental design and database fitting is used to tackle the modularity problem in forward engineering of synthetic genetic networks.

CHAINS 2021

Peer van Duppen gave a presentation in NWO CHAINS 2021 online conference, which is the annual Dutch Chemistry conference. Peer talked about temporal environmental patterns as driving force for self-organization in the formose reaction. Great work!
